Browser Hack - Make any web page editable!
filed in General on Jul.08, 2008
So you want to prove you are number 1 in Google? - No problem.
You want to show AdSense earnings of $1m, sure thing!
Maybe you just want to mess around with a popular site - then just follow the simple instructions below:
1) Head over to the web page you want to edit.
2) In the browser’s address bar, paste this code:
javascript:document.body.contentEditable='true'; document.designMode='on'; void 0
3) Now click on the part of the page you want to edit and start changing, deleting and adding text.
Here’s an example (although probably not the best):
![]()
Give it a go.

My good sir, you are a genius.
July 10th, 2008 on 1:27 pm
Thanks Max,
How are you using this trick?
July 11th, 2008 on 6:09 am
This si really cool!! You are amazing. But how can I use it?
July 11th, 2008 on 6:57 am
I’m actually going to make a post similar to yours about it (giving you credit and a backlink, of course).
Hopefully you don’t mind
July 11th, 2008 on 7:19 am
Thats fine Max, thanks for the link back.
Allure - You can use it to mess around with to create creative screen shots of your favourite sites. Or if you were into internet marketing you could use it to inflate profits in teh links of adsense etc.

Nice trick!
July 12th, 2008 on 3:24 am
this is cool and all…but i have a small question….how do you get out of it?
July 12th, 2008 on 4:14 am
Am I the only one who read that as ‘make any web page edible”?

It doesn’t stay there though, right?
July 13th, 2008 on 9:59 pm
[...] combined over 8,000 visits to the site, with almost everyone of them visiting my post about the javascript browser hack. That post has already a massed 10 comments, probably the most any post on my blog has ever got. [...]
July 13th, 2008 on 10:03 pm
@SX-301 and Lee, it doesn’t stay there you can either retype a url over it or you can click the browser refresh button to reload the original page.
July 14th, 2008 on 6:01 pm
Why not use the “firebug” plug in for firefox? It lets you edit everything and test it after . Really helpful and 1 million times better than this lame “hack”
July 15th, 2008 on 2:05 am
isn’t it illegal to do that?
July 15th, 2008 on 3:28 am
That;s great but how do I save it? It;s no good if only I can see it. I want the world to see it.
July 15th, 2008 on 8:40 am
ahhhh, that’s how they fake all that stuff. I thought they just cut and pasted the source code.
July 16th, 2008 on 4:10 am
Awesome Phil,
Can I aslo do something similar and provide a backlink to your post?
Thanks,
Jerry
July 16th, 2008 on 9:12 am
Of course Jerry - no problem.
@Ray - You can use the print screen option to take a screen shot.
July 18th, 2008 on 2:38 pm
Couple questions answered.
Ray- Can’t save it sadly
alex- It’s not illegal because the only person who really sees it is you and it’s not saved in any way.
July 20th, 2008 on 9:37 pm
Did my post send any traffic your way?
July 21st, 2008 on 11:07 am
How do you stop all the links from turning blue so it looks more realistic?
July 23rd, 2008 on 2:26 pm
Photoshopped - anyone can see the pixels are all wrong
July 23rd, 2008 on 9:28 pm
How long will the changes last once their made
July 24th, 2008 on 11:30 am
ZOMG?! YOU MEAN THAT I CAN’T HACK TEH INTERWBZ WITH A SINGLE LINE OF CODE?! THIS ISN’T ILLEGAL?! OMGWTFBBQ?!
Kids, if it was that easy to permanently change a website, don’t you think we’d see a lot more vandalism?
Nifty trick, though.
July 24th, 2008 on 11:39 am
I love it!
There’s some clever folk about nowadays.
July 24th, 2008 on 2:05 pm
You might want to mention that you have to hit GO after pasting it in the address bar.
I have a question: How do you get the page to save the changes?
July 25th, 2008 on 9:49 am
How LAME can it be to edit some other dopes website in a method that I’ll be the only one affected… Like writing graffiti on the bathroom wall in my own house. Well i guess i could post some screencap of both of them to show off his doucheness.

Worth noting: It has problems with the contents of frames.
July 28th, 2008 on 3:06 am
That was fun. I used it to screw with the mind of a friend that has just put up a DIY website about himself . I anonymously sent him an e-mail with a screen shot of the edited homepage. He is freaking out about now! Don’t worry - he deserves it.
Thanks!
July 28th, 2008 on 7:13 am
nice list, thanks for sharing.
August 2nd, 2008 on 10:24 pm
It will edit it only for the ONE user.. eg. the browser that attempted to modify it. Refresh and it’s gone.
Misleading
August 3rd, 2008 on 1:00 pm
Do I paste it OVER what’s already in the address bar, or at the END, or just after “www”? Also, do I leave a space between the semi-colon and the next word?
Please be kind - I’m sure I’m old enough to be your grandmother! I wasn’t born with a mouse in my hand.
Thanks!

Now seriously, laserfist, you really believe that I can go to CNN and change all their headlines to reflect “We’re Throwing A Party Tonight, Come On By”?
Not misleading at all. I think that the author was just supposing that his readers would have elementary internet knowledge.
August 5th, 2008 on 5:07 am
Or might I add, SteamIT, elementary common sense…
August 11th, 2008 on 4:44 am
hahaha

August 18th, 2008 on 9:53 pm
Thank god.
I’ll never have to photoshop my grades ever again.
